Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine how a video producer and a subject matter expert (SME) collaborate on creating a workforce training video, specifically to ensure that the andragogical intent of the training remains clear throughout production. While research exists on SME-Instructional Designer (ID) partnerships and the effectiveness of video in training, there is limited study on SME and video producer collaboration. This research used an autoethnographic, qualitative approach, involving interviews and reflections, to explore the history and dynamics of a video producer-SME partnership in training video creation. Key findings reveal the importance of understanding expertise, foundational adult learning principles, and effective collaboration for successful outcomes. This study highlights how video and andragogy work in tandem and how balanced collaboration is essential. The adage “a camel is a horse designed by a committee” underscores the risk of a poorly coordinated collaboration leading to ineffective training videos.
